Just read the book. Absolutely brilliant. It is a must read to understand what families went through during this turbulent time in our history, not to mention the soldiers trials and tribulations. Australian school children should have to read this as part of Australian History. Well done Stephen!

Hello Stephen,
I had just finished reading Mistaken Identity and I loved it. I have an interest in Australian history especially convict life, I also have been interested in the Sydney Ducks, and have for quite some time.

Just finished ‘Crack Hardy’. What a fabulous book depicting the human cost of war both on the battlefields and for the families at home.
I was introduced to the book by a distant family member whilst tracing my family tree. My Great Grandmother Martha was also a Dando, and although the connection is distant, it is strange how strong that connection became as I turned the pages of the book.
I live in Lancashire and initially scoured the pages of ‘Crack Hardy’ for the name of Viv’s Lancastrian mate so that I might lay a poppy at the memorial to pay tribute to their brief friendship and in a round about way give my respect to the Searle brothers.
The Lancastrian’s name evaded me and yet by the end of the book in similarity to your own reflection Stephen, I found that his name no longer mattered.
I will lay my poppy not for the Lancastrian mate, the Searle brothers or even the Dando family. Instead my poppy will be placed with a much deeper respect for all those near and far who suffered for our freedom.
The ability to enlighten others is a wonderful gift. Thank you
